Most people meet Lista in someone else's shop. You open a drawer, it slides out its full length without a wobble under fifty pounds of tooling, every socket is in its own slot, and you go home and start searching. That search usually starts with the words "Lista tool box," and what you find is confusing, because Lista does not sell tool boxes. It sells industrial drawer cabinets, and understanding that difference is what stops you buying the wrong thing.
What a Lista actually is
A tool box, in the Snap-on, Matco, Harbor Freight US General sense, is a matched set: a top chest, a rolling bottom, drawers of assorted depths chosen by the manufacturer for a general tool collection. You buy the set and you fit your tools to it.
A Lista is one cabinet. Every drawer runs on the same full-extension slides rated at 440 lb, and the inside of each drawer is empty until you divide it. You choose the drawer heights when you buy, and you choose the compartment layout afterward, with partitions you can move whenever the tools change. It is built for a machine shop where a missing insert stops a job, which is why it is overbuilt for holding wrenches and exactly right for holding everything else.
The practical difference in a garage: a tool box gives you drawers. A Lista gives you compartments. Our nine-drawer cabinets run from 105 to 124 separately findable places depending on the layout, and a ten-drawer configuration goes to 206. That is the whole argument for the price.

For context: that is above a mid-range roll cab and below a loaded professional box, for a cabinet rated to industrial duty. Stationary cabinets and taller eye-level units, with dimensions and compartment counts for all of them, are on the dimensions page.
Which one to buy for a garage
- Tight space, or you need to move it around a lot. The MP compact footprint at 22 3/16 inches wide fits between a bench and a car and still clears a standard door with room to spare.
- General garage duty. The ST standard footprint at about 28 inches wide is the default rolling cabinet and the one most people should buy.
- You want it to become a workbench. Take the HS wide footprint at 40 1/4 inches and put a butcher block top on it. Wide and shallow means it sits closer to the wall and gives you a real work surface. Tops and which cabinet each fits are in the dimensions table, and bench height is covered in what height should your workbench be.
- Bench height versus counter height. Bench height sits under a worksurface. Counter height is a standalone cabinet you work off the top of. Pick before you order; you cannot change it later.
Buying one used
Most Lista cabinets in home garages got there secondhand, out of a plant liquidation or an auction, and that is a good way to buy one. Two things to know before you do.
Check the generation before you pay. Lista changed housing and drawer dimensions between generations, so a current drawer will not always fit an older housing. A cabinet missing two drawers can be a cabinet that stays missing two drawers. Photograph the model number first.
Assume it has no keys. This is the single most common thing that happens: the cabinet arrives locked, or it arrives unlocked and then someone shuts a drawer and it latches. It is not a disaster and it does not need drilling. The Lista lock is a removable core, so a locksmith opens it, the old core comes out with a release tool, and a new keyed core drops in.
The full inspection checklist, including what to look at on the slides and the housing, is in buying a used Lista cabinet. Cores and the release tool are on the lock cores page, and we sell them to people who bought their cabinets from someone else, which is most of the people who buy them.
A note on "Lister"
Plenty of people search for Lister tool boxes or Lister tool cabinets. There is no industrial cabinet brand called Lister. It is Lista, and if that is what you were looking for, you are in the right place.
Common questions
Is a Lista cabinet the same as a tool box?
It does the same job and it is built differently. A tool box is a chest and roll cab sold as a set, with drawers sized around a general tool collection. A Lista is a single industrial drawer cabinet where every drawer is the same 440 lb rating and you divide the inside yourself. If you want a top chest and a rolling bottom that match, buy a tool box. If you want every tool to have one findable place, buy a Lista.
How much does a Lista tool box cost?
New, our stocked mobile cabinets run about $3,000 to $4,500 delivered, freight included, depending on width and drawer count. That is more than a mid-range roll cab and less than a high-end one, for a cabinet built to a different standard.
Are Lista cabinets worth it for a home garage?
For most people, only if the drawers earn it. The value of a Lista is drawer density: 440 lb full-extension drawers you can divide down to individual sockets, so nothing is buried. If your tools already fit fine in what you have, a Lista will not change your life. If you are constantly digging, it will.
What is the difference between Lista and Lister tool boxes?
Lister is a common misspelling of Lista. There is no industrial cabinet brand called Lister. If you are searching for Lister tool cabinets or Lister tool boxes, Lista is almost certainly what you are looking for.
Can I put a worksurface on top of a Lista cabinet?
Yes, and it is one of the most common ways they are used. Butcher block, plastic laminate, and stainless tops are made to match each cabinet footprint, which turns a drawer cabinet into a workbench with storage underneath.
Do Lista cabinets come with keys?
New ones do. Used ones very often do not, which is the single most common problem people have after buying one secondhand. It is fixable without drilling: the lock is a removable core and a new keyed core drops in.
