Uline and Global Industrial vs Lista

By Anthony Trinh, Charlie One LLC · Last updated: September 26, 2026

We sell Lista, so read this knowing that. It is also true that a lot of the Lista cabinets we sell go into shops that already own Uline or Global Industrial cabinets, usually bought by whoever handles purchasing because they were cheap and arrived the next day. The engineers and technicians who work out of them are the ones who call us.

Rather than tell you the cheap cabinets are terrible, here is what each seller publishes about its own product, side by side, with blanks where nobody publishes a number. Decide from that.

Competitor figures and prices are from each seller's own product page as listed on September 26, 2026, and prices there change. Blank cells mean the seller does not publish that figure, not that the cabinet lacks the feature. The Lista price is our delivered price and updates with the product page.

The cabinet is 1 to 2 percent of what is in it

Price a drawer of tooling. A row of CAT 40 holders with cutters, a set of mics and indicators, a drawer of boxed inserts: a single cabinet in a working machine shop commonly holds $20,000 to $50,000 of tools. Against that, the difference between a $635 cabinet and a $4,441 cabinet is small, and the question is which one you would trust with the contents.

The failure is never dramatic. A drawer rated at 200 lb gets loaded to 300 because it is the drawer that was open. The slide starts to droop at full extension, the drawer front bows, and one day the drawer comes off the slide with the tools in it. A dropped drawer of holders costs more than the cabinet did. A dropped drawer of gauge blocks costs more than the good cabinet would have.

Where the cheap cabinets are honestly fine

Consumables. Rags, gloves, tape, boxed hardware, spare belts, anything light and easy to replace. A 100 lb drawer holds that forever, and a $635 cabinet by the loading dock is a perfectly good decision. The Uline modular cabinet, with 16 gauge drawers and a 440 lb rating on its taller drawers, is a step up again and a fair choice for light tooling.

The mistake is using the same cabinet for the tooling, because it was there and it was cheap.

What the table does not show

What happens in year eight

A drawer gets bent by a forklift, or a lock is lost, or the shop needs six more compartments in the insert drawer. With a Lista you order the drawer by model number, drop in a new lock core, and buy the dividers. With the cabinets in the other columns you are searching for a part that is not on the seller's site, or buying a new cabinet. None of the three publishes a replacement drawer program, and none offers a way to rekey short of replacing the lock.

Keys, at ten cabinets and up

One cabinet, any lock works. Ten cabinets across a shop, and the lock is the whole purchase. Lista's removable core lets you key every machine cabinet alike, give the crib its own key, and hand the supervisor a master, then change any of it later without touching the cabinet. The cabinets in the other columns ship keyed different, and that is where they stay. More on keying at keys and locks.

Every drawer, not just the tall ones

Lista rates every drawer at 440 lb, the 2 inch drawer of inserts and the 11 inch drawer of fixtures alike. Uline's modular cabinet rates its 4 inch drawers at 165 lb and only the taller ones at 440. That matters because the shallow drawers are the ones that fill with dense small parts.

If you are replacing cheap cabinets

Three things we see work:

  • Move the tooling first. Holders, cutters, measuring tools and fixtures go into the rated cabinet. Consumables stay where they are. See CNC tool storage for which drawer heights hold what.
  • Key the new cabinets as a set. Keyed alike at the machines, a separate key for the crib. It is far easier to set up now than to retrofit.
  • Start with one. Put a single Lista next to the cabinet it is replacing and let the people who use it decide. Stocked models are on the dimensions page with delivered prices, and ship in one to two weeks.

Common questions

Are Uline cabinets good enough for a machine shop?

It depends which one. The Uline Tool Cabinet is built from 20 and 23 gauge steel with 100 and 200 lb drawers, which is a garage cabinet. The Uline Modular Drawer Cabinet is heavier, with 16 gauge drawers and a 440 lb rating on its taller drawers, and it is a reasonable cabinet for light use. Neither publishes a warranty, a replacement drawer program, or a way to rekey without replacing the lock.

What does a 200 lb drawer rating actually mean?

It is the load at which the maker will still stand behind the slide. A drawer of steel tool holders, a set of vises, or a full drawer of boxed inserts reaches 200 lb faster than most people expect. Past the rating the slide sags at full extension, then binds, then the drawer front bows. The rating is not the number the drawer breaks at; it is the number you should never plan to load past.

Why does Lista cost twice as much as Global Industrial?

Mostly for things that do not show on a spec table: drawers rated 440 lb regardless of height, ball-bearing slides that still run true after twenty years, a lock core you can swap instead of a lock you replace, and a factory that will sell you a matching drawer or a divider for the cabinet a decade from now. If the cabinet holds a few thousand dollars of tools, those matter less. If it holds forty thousand, they are the whole purchase.

I already have cheap cabinets. Do I throw them out?

No. Keep them for what they are good at: consumables, rags, PPE, boxed spares, anything light and cheap. Move the tooling and the measuring equipment into a cabinet rated for it. Most shops we work with run both.

Can I get a Lista as fast as Uline ships?

Not same day. Stocked Lista models ship in one to two weeks with freight included. If you need a cabinet on the floor tomorrow, buy the cheap one for now and plan the real one.

Tell us what is in the cabinets now and what they cost you, and we will show you which of them to replace and which to keep. We are an authorized Lista dealer and we will tell you when the cheap cabinet is the right call. Ask about replacing a cabinet.
