Three problems bring people to this page: a drawer that needs to come out, a drawer that will not open, and a drawer that sags or grinds. Before you touch anything
- One drawer at a time. A Lista drawer carries up to 440 lb at full extension. Two loaded drawers open at once moves the center of gravity fast, and an unanchored cabinet can tip. This is the one rule on this page that protects you rather than the cabinet.
- Check the lock first. A surprising share of "stuck" drawers are locked drawers. If the keys are missing, do not pry anything: the code on any surviving key gets new keys cut by mail, and if every key is gone the lock itself swaps out in ten minutes.
- Do not force a jam. Forcing a wedged drawer bends rails, and bent rails turn a free fix into a parts order.
Freeing a stuck drawer
Ten years of servicing these cabinets in the field says most "broken" Lista cabinets are one of five things, and the first two cost nothing to fix. Work the list in order:
- Lock engaged. Lista cabinets lock all drawers at once. Confirm the lock is fully released; a partially turned core still blocks the mechanism on some cabinets. Lost the key? Start here.
- A bag caught in the lock mechanism. This is the classic Lista jam. The locking mechanism runs down the center of the back of the cabinet, and a plastic bag or ziplock riding at the back of a drawer drifts into it and fouls it, and suddenly a drawer, or the whole bank, will not open. The field fix: look down between the drawers with a light to confirm, then slide a long, thin metal shim or a metal yardstick down between the drawers and work the rear locking mechanism, poking it between its locked and unlocked positions until it frees. Once it releases, open the drawer and pull the bag out of the channel. Five minutes, no parts.
- Contents wedged. Something tall shifted and is caught under the drawer above. Open the drawer above if you can, look down into the gap, and free the item with a hook or magnet rather than by pulling harder.
- Overload. A drawer loaded far past rating can deflect enough to drag. If the drawer face sits visibly low compared to its neighbors, this is likely.
- Bent rail or failed roller. If the drawer moves but grinds, catches at the same spot every time, or sits crooked in its opening, the running gear is the problem. That is a parts fix, not a technique fix.
Removing a Lista drawer
Step 1: Empty it
Or at least strip the heavy items. You are about to lift this drawer at arm's length, and a loaded drawer at 440 lb rating is not a one person lift.
Step 2: Pull to full extension
Lista drawers open 100 percent, so the drawer body clears the housing completely. Pull until it stops.
Step 3: Release the two retaining clips
On each drawer rail sits a small plastic clip whose only job is to keep the drawer from coming off the rail system. Pull both clips toward you to release them. The clips are captive, they stay on the rail, so there is nothing to drop into the cabinet or lose on the floor.
Step 4: Lift the drawer up and out toward you
With both clips released, lift the drawer up and out toward you, keeping it level side to side. Reinstalling is the reverse: seat the drawer on the extended rails, push the retaining clips back in, and cycle the drawer twice to confirm it tracks straight.

Sagging, grinding, or hard rolling drawers
Lista running gear is steel on steel and lasts decades, but rollers do wear, and drawers that spent years loaded past rating wear them faster. The symptoms escalate in a predictable order: rolling effort goes up, then noise, then the drawer sits low or crooked. Any of those means the roller carriage or slide hardware should be swapped before the drawer body or housing gets damaged.
