There are three kinds of workbench on the market. Garage benches from the home centers, built for a homeowner who uses them on weekends. Discount industrial benches from the big catalog sellers, built to be cheap and ship today. And industrial benches built for people who work at them all shift, for years, with expensive tooling in the drawers.
We sell the third kind, so read this knowing that. We will also tell you where the first two are the right buy, because often they are. Below is what each seller publishes about its own bench, side by side, with blanks where nobody publishes a number.

- Need a flat steel table? A discount open bench is a good buy. Its published capacity is higher than ours.
- Need drawers that hold tooling? Look at the drawer rating, not the drawer count. That is where garage and discount benches fall short: 50 to 120 lb per drawer, against 440 lb.
- Outfitting a line, a cell or a crib? You are buying a system: matched worksurfaces, rated pedestals, one key across every bench and cabinet, and parts you can still order in ten years.

Count the total, not just the drawers. Eight drawers at 50 lb is 400 lb of rated drawer storage. Fifteen at 120 lb is 1,800 lb, spread across shallow drawers. Four at 440 lb is 1,760 lb, and every one of those drawers can take a full load of steel at full extension.

Here the cheaper benches win on paper, and we would rather say so. A $440 steel-top table rated 2,000 lb is a good table. The case for an industrial open bench is not capacity. It is the worksurface (static-dissipative for electronics, stainless for clean work), the fit with drawer pedestals and cabinets, and a frame that still looks and works the same in year ten.
Competitor figures and prices are from each seller's own product page on October 1, 2026, and prices there change. Husky lock and warranty details are from Home Depot Canada's listing of the same model, because the US page does not show them. Lowe's shows the Kobalt price only after a store is selected. Where garage and discount benches are the right call
Packing and shipping tables. Staging tables. A bench by the dock that holds tape, labels and boxes. A maintenance bench that gets light, occasional use. A home garage. For all of these, a discount bench is a sensible purchase, and buying industrial would be spending money for nothing.
The mistake is putting the same bench where the tooling lives, because it was cheap and it arrived the next day.

The drawers carry the load, not the top

If you are replacing discount or garage benches
- Start where the tooling is. Replace the benches with loaded drawers first. Leave the packing and staging tables alone.
- Key the new benches and cabinets as a set. It is easy to set up now and painful to retrofit.

Common questions
Is a Husky or Kobalt workbench good enough for a shop?
For a home garage, yes, and they are good value. In a production shop the weak point is the drawers, not the top. The Husky 72 inch bench rates its drawers at 120 lb, which is fine for hand tools and light for tooling, fixtures or measuring equipment that gets pulled out every shift. The Kobalt 72 inch bench has no drawers at all. Neither is built around replacement parts or rekeyable locks, because a garage does not need them.
The Global Industrial bench is rated 2,000 lb and the Lista is 1,000 lb. Why pay more?
For a plain steel table, you should not. If the job is a flat steel top that holds weight, the $440 Global Industrial bench is a solid buy and we will tell you so. Lista benches earn their price when the bench is part of a system: a worksurface matched to the work (ESD for electronics, stainless for clean areas), drawer pedestals rated 440 lb per drawer, and benches and cabinets that color match and share one key system across a cell.
What does a 50 lb drawer rating mean in practice?
It is the most the maker stands behind at full extension. A drawer of sockets is fine. A drawer of steel tool holders, a set of vises, or boxed inserts gets past 50 lb quickly, and past the rating the slide sags, then binds, then the drawer front bows. Plan the drawer for what will actually go in it, not what you hope will.
Do I need to replace every cheap bench in the shop?
No. Packing tables, staging tables and benches that hold light work are fine as they are. Replace the benches where the tooling lives and where people work all shift. Most shops we work with run both.
Can I get an industrial bench quickly?
